TouchPad: Create/Add Report Banners - image sizes and formats

To add a new banner after you click Add on the Available Banners tab,
Add New Banner

  1. Enter a unique Banner Name.
  2. Select a Banner Type.
  3. Click Choose File.
  4. Locate the desired file that matches the Banner Type dimensions you selected and double click it, or click it once and click Open.
  5. Click Add.
  6. If the file dimensions match the Banner Type chosen, a dialog will confirm the file was added. Click OK.
  7. Repeat steps 1-6 to add more banners, and click Close when finished.

When adding Report Banners, there are very specific image sizes you should use for each type. The proper size for an image in pixels depends on the DPI (dots per inch) in it. Windows typically defaults to 96 DPI, whereas macOS is 72 DPI. What the DPI will be for images downloaded from the web is anyone's guess. TouchPad banners can be a maximum of 150 DPI. The higher the DPI, the better the image will look when printed.

Header - 8 x 1.5 inches (20.32 x 3.81 cm)
72 DPI = 576 x 108 pixels
96 DPI = 768 x 144
150 DPI = 1200 x 225
Header banner

1 column - 8 x 1 inches (20.32 x 2.54 cm)
72 DPI = 576 x 72 pixels
96 DPI = 768 x 96
150 DPI = 1200 x 150
1 column banner

2 column - 4 x 1 inches (10.16 x 2.54 cm)
72 DPI = 288 x 72 pixels
96 DPI = 384 x 96
150 DPI = 600 x 150
2 column banner

3 column - 2.67 x 1 inches (6.78 x 2.54 cm)
72 DPI = 192 x 72 pixels
96 DPI = 256 x 96
150 DPI = 400 x 150
3 column banner

Bottom line: Use the 96 DPI dimensions above and you should be fine.

Image format: JPEG, PNG or TIFF. Color profile (AKA color space or color system) must be RGB, not CMYK.
File size: 1 megabyte maximum

Warning: TouchPad will let you load images of any width and height and will stretch or shrink the image to fit in the selected dimensions. This means, for example, that you could load a 3 column sized image as a Header, but it likely won't look good since it will be stretched horizontally to 3x its width to fill the area, so we strongly advise against it. Or, if you load a regular photo as a 2 column type, it will squash it vertically to fit. As long as the image aspect ratio (width vs. height) matches or closely matches the dimensions above, it should look fine.

A best practice is to use an image editing program, such as Photoshop or GIMP, to create your banners with the proper dimensions. Suppose you want to make a 2 column banner from an existing image at 96 DPI. There are a couple of approaches to use.

  • Load an existing image, resize it as desired, then select an area of 384x96 and crop it.
  • Open an image, select and copy it, create a blank 384x96 image template, paste in the image, then resize and shift around to fit within the template.

Please consult your image editor's help documentation for specifics to accomplish this. Most programs will let you add text on top of images and of course create one from scratch.

If you do not have an image editing program, see our Edit or resize images article for some free options.

IMPORTANT: Make sure to preview your reports before printing to make sure your banners look good.
